drawing final exam

  1. Choose a project that you felt was challenging but yet successful. The project should incorporate innovative solutions to the artistic problem given to you. By this I mean how creative, original, mature, innovative were your ideas to develop into the successful piece that answers all the requirements for the project and beyond. We have had many projects that have explored this creative way of brainstorming, sketching, planning compositions and ending with final product. In our “Look at that View” perspective project you had to draw something original from an interesting point of view. You also had to utilize many graphite application techniques, shading, line, lighting, textures, etc. Other projects were Opacity/Transparency, Scratchboard showing texture, movement and contrast, Self-portraits as zombies, expression or mechanical, plus others. When you have chosen the project you feel best fits this question take pictures of all your brainstorming ideas, sketches (development stages) that led up to final decision and product and post them with this response. Discuss how you generated innovative/original/creative ideas for the project and how you developed them to completing your final piece. Explain to me why the piece you chose caught your eye. How did you think outside the box and challenge yourself as well as the restraints of the project.
The Project that I choose to use in answer to this question is my opacity project. For this project I was able to use Prismacolors to draw a bag of apples. I was having a really hard time deciding on what to do for this project. All along I knew that I wanted to use Prismacolors, because of their smooth texture, but I was unsure of what I actually wanted to draw. I decided on a bag of apples because it seemed simple enough, yet still challenging. it would be a good way for me to stretch myself, while still feeling comfortable with it. I had a difficult time creating the "opacity" part of this opacity project. I am quite the perfectionist when it comes to my own work, so I really struggled with getting it just right. I am the kind of person to really play things safe, so I think that this was a bit of a stretch in my comfort zone, because I went with a dark plastic bag instead of the white/clear ones we had been taught to draw. I generated so many ideas for this project because Mrs. Rossi had us write down twenty ideas, and she would help us to pick the final one. I think this is a really good way of doing things, because it helps me at least to get really excited about one idea. I think that this specific piece caught my eye because I worked so hard on it, and I think that this piece took the most time, and effort. I would have to say that this piece is my favorite that I did over this semester. I love all the different colors and textures I created in the drawing.

2:Which project was your most successful? Describe the theme and or topic and the process you went through to complete the project. Were the choices you made regarding material, size, technique, etc beneficial to enhancing this project. Please explain.

Other than my opacity project, I would have to say that my favorite thing I created over this last semester is my scratchboard project. This project was very different from what I have done in any art classes before. We had to draw a rough draft type of drawing in our sketchbook, then move on to drawing with white colored pencil on a black paper. We then had to take a couple sheets of transfer paper, and lay it on top of the scratch board, with our black paper over it. After we had done this, we traced over the lines on the black sheet of paper, pressing harder then we had before. after we got all the way finished tracing, we lifted up both the black paper, and the tracing paper until it was only the scratchboard. The scratchboard then had a faint, white outline on it, so we knew just where to scratch, so it would be harder to mess up. We were given an xacto knife, and another scratching tool, and we started scratching. I really loved this project because of the intense contrast in the values. things were either white or black. There wasn't really an easy in between. I decided to use the xacto knife more than the other tool. I think that by doing this it helped me to get more fine, controlled lines, and more overall detail. I thought it was difficult to make the picture so big, because the biggest I'm used to going is as big as my sketchbook, but I think going big was a good idea because it allowed me to capture more of the details in the picture.

3: Look over the blogs of other students in our class. Choose a piece of artwork from one of your classmates that you feel is an exemplary showcase of what the project was to depict. Think about how the artist used the medium, utilized the elements of art and design principles, was original with their ideas and went beyond their comfort zone or the realm of the requirements. Make sure you have the image of their artwork along with their name (first name only) posted with this response.

I chose to look at Stacia's blog, and I really love her Look at that view project. I think she did an excellent job of thinking outside of the box. Nobody else in the class had an idea even similar to this. She did an excellent job shifting values so that the whole color would change. She did a really nice job creating a blended, and smooth texture with the prismas. I don't really know her personally, but for me, if I were to do this project, it would definitely be expanding my comfort zone. I think that this piece had to be even a little bit daunting for Stacia to take on because it's so insanely different. I really really do love this piece, and the bright and happy mood it brings with it.
